Xerox working on re-usable printer supplies
29/11/2006 09:50
Printing company Xerox has developed an innovative new way of printing that it claims can save firms thousands of pounds on wasted printer supplies.
Using "transient" paper, the firm claims to have produced a way of printing documents which fade away after 24 hours, leaving paper ready to be re-used.
It claims that each of the sheets of paper can be used up to 50 times, reducing the amount of waste produced by firms and the amount of office supplies needlessly wasted on throwaway documents.
According to figures from research undertaken by the Xerox Research Center of Canada (XRCC), an average worker prints 1,200 documents a month, a fifth of which ends up in the bin on the same day.
Paul Smith, a manager at XRCC, said: "Despite our reliance on computers to share and process information, there is still a strong dependence on the printed page for reading and absorbing content.
"We'd all like to use less paper but we know from talking with customers that many people still prefer to work with information on paper. Self-erasing documents for short-term use offers the best of both worlds."
While Xerox's development remains a research project at present, the advancement of re-usable printer supplies has come into sharp focus in recent weeks with Toshiba also announcing a new printer that uses plastic paper.
Toshiba claims that its product can be re-used up to 500 times, offering a huge saving to businesses on the amount of printer supplies they purchase.
