Police promote paper shredders
05/12/2006 10:21
South Yorkshire Police have joined forces with office equipment experts ACCO to help prevent business fraud, according to reports.
Recent figures have shown that corporate identity theft is on the increase in the UK and while many home consumers have been advised to use paper shredders to destroy documents containing important and potentially sensitive data, many businesses have not.
This has led the police force and ACCO to join together to offer practical tips and advice to business across the north-east and the rest of the UK.
According to South Yorkshire Police, fraudsters will adopt the guise of company directors to appear more legitimate before placing orders for goods and products which they never intend to pay for and will often sell-on for a profit at a later date.
Andy Foster, deputy crime reduction manager with South Yorkshire Police, said: "Sensitive information can be taken from computers, personal details can be copied from cash machines, or account numbers taken from bills and statements disposed of in bins.
"Victims of identity theft spend up to 300 hours trying to repair their credit record as it takes on average 18 months before someone even realises their identity has been stolen. Prevention is the only viable course of action."
As part of the campaign by the office equipment experts and the police, 30 paper shredders are up for grabs in a competition currently begun run on the South Yorkshire Police website.
At Paperstone, we offer a massive range of paper shredders to help keep you and your business safe.
