Offices roasted for electrical waste
14/12/2006 13:05
Office equipment left on standby over the Christmas period will waste enough energy to roast 4.4 million turkeys, a new report has claimed.
A study by office equipment supplier Canon has revealed that not properly turning off products when leaving the office can waste serious amounts of energy, especially over prolonged periods such as the festive season.
PCs, laptops, printers and other hi-tech office equipment are the main culprits but lights and other smaller electrical goods have an impact as well.
Around 43 KwHs of electricity will be wasted by office equipment left on standby which has led Canon to claim that the UK could roast literally millions of additional turkeys using the same amount of power.
David Smith, marketing director at Canon Business Solutions, said: "It's clear that some equipment needs to be left on over the Christmas period for security reasons.
"But these amazing figures show that businesses that don't turn off their PCs and printers are literally throwing money away as well as damaging the environment over the festive period."
He added that Canon only investigated the impact of office equipment left on standby and that environmental impact was likely to be much larger when computers, printers and faxes are left completely switched on.
At Paperstone, we offer a full range of office equipment, which you should switch off when out of the workplace.
