C4 Envelopes
C4 envelopes are envelopes which will accommodate documents A4 in size. For this reason C4 envelopes are sometimes referred to as A4 envelopes, though technically C4 is an envelope size as defined by International standard ISO 269 while A4 is an ISO 216 standard paper size designation. (Enjoying yourself?)
What more can be said about C4 envelopes, or more colloquially, “A4 envelopes” if you're feeling frivolous?
C4 envelopes are available in good old plain form, manilla, and with windows so that the address peeps through. Peel and seal or press seal.
The C4 envelope range at Paperstone
We think you'll agree, the Paperstone range of C4 envelopes is more than sufficient for any enveloping needs. The range includes:
Envelopes – Observations d'histoire
- While some 4,000 years ago the Babylonians weren't preoccupied with envelope sizes like C4 and A4, they did innovate a precursor to the envelope as we understand the object today. They would surround documents with clay wrappers, the clay baked solid around bookkeeping accounts, deeds, mortgages and perhaps even letters. It was a good system because the clay wrapper had to be completely destroyed to access the document. A bit heavy though.
- Later parchment eras were not conducive to developments in flat envelope technology because scrolls were rolled. But sealing innovations would have occurred.
- According to envelope historian Maynard Benjamin, it was Louis XIV of France who popularised the use of a flat cover to ensure the privacy of letters.
- Benjamin's book, The history of envelopes 1840-1900, is currently out of print.
