Coat Hooks
Metal and wood coat hooks and coat racks from Alba and Acorn are stylish, discreet and offer a great storage solution for hanging coats, jackets, scarves, hats and bags. In fact, the ubiquity of today's coat hook originates in part from the fact that lower middle class Victorian and Edwardian houses did not have the space in their front halls for more luxurious coat and hat stands that larger households afforded. Such coat stands were pieces of furniture that were becoming very popular among the more affluent as households received an increasing number of guests and visitors. Coat hooks and coat racks are smart and cheap. Hooks, racks and pegs can be mounted to a wall in modular fashion, using as many or as few as you like. Fixtures and fittings are hidden from view while smart graphite, metal and wood finishes are actually an attractive adornment to a wall. We think that coat hooks and racks are decorative in their own right.
Coat hook history
While Thomas Jefferson (of US constitution and presidential note) is famously attributed with the invention of the coat hanger, no such glamour adorns the history of the coat hook, if such a history can be discerned. Such is the intuitiveness of their design that coat hooks can seem to defy attempts to locate origins and invention. Coat racks and wall pegs for coats were certainly around before coat hangers and were also more common, at least until the turn of the last century. In fact the standard narrative about Albert J Parkhouse's invention of the wire hanger in 1903 runs that this company employee bent wire into a shape suitable for supporting clothing in response to fellow workers' complaints that there weren't enough coat hooks on which to hang their clothes.
Today, coat hooks, racks and pegs can be used in exactly the same way: to hang clothing directly onto the hook or to use the hook to suspend coat hangers, thus economising on space even further. Take a look at our range of coat hooks to find the right space-saving clothes storage for your home and/or office.
