Soaps and Detergents

Surfactants – or surface acting agents – are wetting agents that facilitate spreading between liquids. In cleaning they allow oils and water to mix, letting you remove the offending grime. Soaps are the surfactants we are most familiar with. Soap works because its molecules attach both to oils and grease and to water. Soapy water holds these particles in suspension which can then be washed away by clean water.

Detergents are materials with cleaning properties. They may contain surfactants but they often contain other components as well: abrasives, oxidants, enzymes and pH modifiers to name a few.

Different cleaning situations require different cleaning products. (For instance, dishwasher powder contains anti-foaming agents since foaming reduces the effectiveness of the dish-washing action.) That's why we supply a full complement of soaps and other cleaners:

  • Bathroom Cleaners
  • Cream Cleaners
  • Dishwasher Powder
  • Floor Cleaners
  • Hand Wash
  • Kitchen Cleaners
  • Multipurpose Cleaners

Bleach

Bleaches are mainly used for two purposes: to remove colour and to disinfect. Bleaches remove colours by breaking down the chemical bonds of chromophores, the parts of molecules that have colour. Bleaches disinfect by killing microbes. Bleaching agents disrupt their cell membranes, inhibiting or killing the cells. We supply thick bleaches from Parazone and Maxima.

Never mix household chemicals together. You may end up producing something nasty like chlorine gas.

Always wear protective Gloves when handling household chemicals.

Cleaning products in popular culture

  • Fairy have been using the slogan, “Now hands that do dishes can feel as soft as your face, with mild green Fairy Liquid,” since 1961.
  • The term soap opera originates from serialised radio dramas that were sponsored by the likes of Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Lever Brothers. These early serials were aired in weekday daytime slots and so had a predominantly female – indeed housewife – audience.
  • Contestant Alex Sibley's obsession with cleanliness in the Big Brother 3 house in 2002 secured him a part in a short-lived advertising campaign for Domestos.
  • Because they are not pH-neutral, household soaps and detergents are not generally used at foam parties.
  • Nirvana released their acclaimed debut, Bleach, in 1989. Several bands have called themselves Bleach, including a UK shoegazer group in the early 1990s and a now disbanded Christian rock outfit from Nashville – who contributed music to a Christian video game called Dance Praise (!).
