Office furniture exhibition set to open in Dubai

A variety of office furniture designs from all over the world are set to be on display in an upcoming exhibition in Dubai.
Open-plan office furniture to be celebrated

Four decades of open-plan office furniture systems are being honoured by Herman Miller at February's Office Exhibition in Dubai.

Originally designed by Robert Propst in the 1960s, Action Office was the groundbreaking design that launched a thousand ranges and revolutionised the layout of modern offices worldwide.

Action Office furniture was hailed as the Most Significant Design since 1960 at the World Design Congress in 1985.

The developed and modernised versions of the original designs are still sold by Herman Miller and the company claims there is still a continuing demand for the office furniture brand.

Manager for Middle East and Africa at Herman Miller Gaby Koudsi said: "This year's show is very exciting, in addition to launching a number of new product ranges, we will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the father of systems furniture, Action Office."

The office furniture exhibition is on from February 4th to 6th.

Herman Miller's UK VillageGreen base in Chippenham has been awarded the company's 12th Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system award.

It is the seventh company facility to achieve the gold status, according to the company.
Office furniture manufacturer posts results

Steelcase has announced a net income of $31.3 million (£15.75 million) for the third quarter.

The global office furniture manufacturer, founded almost a century ago in Michigan and with offices in Strasbourg and London, included charges of goodwill to PolyVision worth $21.1 million.

Individual shares were priced at $0.22, the company said.

President and chief executive James P Hackett of the office furniture company remarked: "We continue to be pleased with the growth in our North America and international segments.

"Though the US financial markets have remained volatile, we have continued to increase our revenue consistent with our growth strategies."

In January shareholders will receive a special cash dividend of $1.75 per share in addition to a regular quarterly dividend of $0.15.

Financial advice website Motley Fool noted that the apparent fall in profits was due to the PolyVision goodwill spend and also that Steelcase had been "on a stock-buying spree".

One of the company's first products patented was a breakthrough in office equipment design: the steel wastebasket.

Prior to its 1914 patent, straw was the popular material - and potentially hazardous if a fire broke out.

Eco-friendly office furniture 'can also be attractive'

Office furniture experts Office Reality have launched a new eco-friendly and stylish range.

Kompass workstations are made from wood sourced from managed forests and built using environmentally friendly methods, comprising two separate units with an optional end unit to hold office equipment such as printers or other office machines or office supplies.

Office Reality says it used chemical-free paints and processes that "are kind to the earth and easily reintegrated back into nature when their lifespan comes to an end".

Director of Office Reality Paul Seddon said: "The greener office needn't just be about the paper used to print and the amount of waste separated for recycling."

Other items of office furniture, including seating, are also available in complimentary colours and styles that the company suggests can project a caring reputation among employees.

The company also makes a range of metal and other wooden office furniture for storage, including wall systems, mobile storage systems, lockers, shelving and filing cabinets.

Also available is a range of clearance items, including workstations and other furniture with a contemporary design, which carry a five-year warranty.
