Paperstone – Office life, work and fun

YouTube’s Most Watched, 2009

By Paperstone on December 31, 2009 in Fun

View counts for the most watched videos on YouTube are in and we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief – because our globalised, trademarked monoculture is in rude health!

By far and away the most watched video, with over 120 million views was that of Susan “SuBo” Boyle’s first performance on Britain’s Got Talent. Millions of us watched incredulously as it emerged that someone conventionally unattractive was able to sing in tune. SuBo’s stratospheric rise to fame was and is unprecedented. Notching 411,820 sales, her album I Dreamed A Dream was the fastest selling UK debut album of all time while in the US it had the biggest opening sales week of 2009 with 701,000 copies sold in its first week.

Another media phenomenon was “David After Dentist”, a movie clip of a seven-year-old boy coming down from a heavy dose of anaesthesia. The video was uploaded to YouTube by the boy’s father and the success of the movie was such that the family were made YouTube partners. This allowed the company to turn the video into a revenue stream by running ads over it.
