Office productivity blamed on the internet

The continuing technology revolution

At least 85 per cent of UK office workers waste up to half an hour every day on blogging websites, and 81 per cent spend a similar period of time surfing social-networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, according to communication consultants Mitel. The research also indicates that a majority of us use the internet at work for personal research and/or for entertainment.

An estimated 233 million working hours are lost each month as a result of employees using social networking sites in the office.

An earlier poll of UK employees commissioned by Expert Messaging suggested that on average we waste about an hour every day unnecessarily faffing about with email due to lack of correct filtering and organisation. Some organisations like Phones4U have banned email use at work because of concerns about productivity.
