Japan launches major recycling scheme for printer cartridges

Six of the biggest manufacturers of office machines and office products in Japan have joined together to launched a recycling programme for used printer cartridges.
Global names in the office machines sector - such as HP, Epson, Lexmark and Dell - have joined forces to encourage the recycling of printer cartridges in towns and cities across Japan, in a bid to reduce the sector's impact on the environment.
Computerworld Malaysia reports that old and used printer cartridges can be dropped off at any of the country's 3,638 post offices.
The Japanese postal service will recycle the printer cartridges free of charge, via a number of sorting plants across the nation.
According to the news provider, about 200 million printer cartridges are sold each year in Japan, however only ten per cent of these are returned for recycling.
Earlier this month, new research revealed that more than 18 million printer cartridges are recycled every year throughout Australia with a net weight of over 5,000 tonnes.
As a number of major office products manufacturers step up their environmentally-friendly campaigns, a study by ARN has found that the recycling of office supplies and printer cartridges in Australia has increased by 40 per cent in the past two years.
