Xerox plant produces eco-friendly toner for printers

A new plant which manufactures environmentally friendly toner for use in printers has been unveiled by office equipment firm Xerox.

Some 20 miles of pipe and stainless steel tanks have been filled with toner particles, which will later be used to fill printer cartridges for use in office machines.

The new emulsion aggregation (EA) toner plant, which has been opened in Rochester in New York state, will increase the office equipment manufacturer’s capacity for EA toner production by 175 per cent.

EA toner was developed and patented by Xerox and can produce high-quality images while using less toner per page. Many Xerox office machines already use the toner, including the WorkCentre multifunction devices and the DocuColor range of colour printers.

Additionally, the EA toner is more eco-friendly because it is chemically grown and can be carefully controlled. It produces less toner waste and requires less energy for manufacturing and use.

"Xerox is the world’s largest manufacturer of toner, so we need to do it efficiently," said Richard Schmachtenberg, vice president of Consumables Development & Manufacturing Group.

"The plant is designed for energy efficiency and is packed with more than 4,000 sensors that track information about temperature, humidity, air flow and other variables."

Xerox was founded in 1906.
