Users of office supplies may be interested to read that free copies of some of Microsoft’s office software will soon be released.

The company said that ad-supported versions of the package would be available soon, which could make it one of the most popular new office supplies around.

Microsoft has also said that the new service, in which programs will be installed on a PC and run advertisements during use, will be introduced with version 9.0 of Works.

Every time a computer goes online, ads will appear along with documents and spreadsheets which are being used by consumers.

The company, which supplies a range of office supplies for both home and professional computers, said that it plans to run the trial until mid-2008, after which it will determine if it is cost-effective.

Rivals of Microsoft have been producing their own free versions of office supplies such as the Works package, which is considered to be one of the reasons for the new scheme.

Office supplies which are included in the Microsoft Works package include a calendar, spreadsheets and a word processor.
