UK-EU mobile use fees closer to cut

Office equipment UK business staff regularly leave the office for meetings and conferences all over the European Union and firms will know all about the high cost of mobile roaming fees.

But plans to slash the charges on calls between EU member states are now closer than ever, after a key European Parliament committee vote.

The vote backs up the European Commission's plans to cut roaming fees by the summer and another vote will take place soon in the full European Parliament to move things forward.

However, all EU member states will need to agree to the plans before anything is concrete.

Paul Rubig, the man responsible for getting the bill through the European Parliament, slammed the current charges.

He told the BBC: "We have one member state where at present you pay five euro cents per minute.

"If you go outside this member state and phone home, you pay three euros. Nobody can explain why that is justified."

And UK business travellers leaving the office to fly with Ryanair will be pleased by their recent announcement that they may soon be able to use their mobiles and blackberries during flights.

If the scheme is approved it could be in place by next year.
