Top tips to counter office fraud
13/04/2007 15:06
Norwich Union building society has recently published top tips to cut the escalating identity fraud currently harming UK businesses.
A survey by financial services group Experian revealed earlier this week that the number of people being affected by ID fraud had risen by a massive 70 per cent in one year, costing the economy £1.7 billion.
Because offices are prime targets for credit card thefts as they often have lax security, Norwich Union asked Peter Wood, chief of operations at First Base Technologies, to suggest ten tips to help protect office staff and customers.
The security specialist gave the example of a cleaner tidying office desks having access to critical IT technology and staff data.
Mr Wood said security policy, procedures, standards and guidelines should be written and kept up to date and that should include vetting for cleaners and subcontractors.
He said staff should receive full security training and be treated with respect, so as to minimise any malicious feeling.
Frequent testing of security products is advised, staff must be motivated to think securely and he also encouraged security assessments for every project plan.
Finally, Mr Wood said security must begin with company bosses; all business components should be security tested and security should become a "core business process".
