Sports firm rolls out mobile printers

Printer supplies Sports company JD Sports has introduced mobile label printers across its stores to increase the ability to move freely throughout the office, it has emerged.

Previously, employees had to write ticket labels for products by hand, but now they are free to spend more time attending to customers' needs, Computer Weekly reports.

Wireless links are used to connect the printers to the retailer's stock control systems so that workers can create labels for prices, shelves and identification.

In addition, the office machines scan stock items and use the information update data at the headquarters and assess product availability throughout the stores.

"The printers mean we can react to seasonal demands and ensure that special offers have a big impact," Shaun Armstrong, IT project manager at JD Sports, told the publication.

"Staff can deal with customer queries on the shop floor rather than go to and from the stockroom checking for available sizes."

In other news about mobile office equipment, Computer Weekly recently reported that Weetabix had installed a mobile system for labelling barcodes at its food manufacturing sites in the UK.

The mobile devices utilise scanners and printers with wireless cards which communicate with the company's product management system.
