Schools fork out thousands on damaged equipment
14/03/2007 12:25
Pupils at schools in Surrey have caused thousands of pounds of damage to equipment and facilities, it has been reported.
Crawley newspaper the News has got its hands on figures that show that more than £18,000 of damage has been inflicted on just three schools in the county.
Oriel High School, Ifield Community College and Thomas Bennett are also three of the newest schools in the area, making the damage all the more shocking according to the News.
Oriel High is highlighted by the News's report as one of the schools worst effected by the damage to equipment and goods.
Only opening in 2004, the school has hard to fork out more than £12,000 in repairs since then.
However, senior officials at the school have rebuked claims that the costs are wholly attributed to vandalism by pupils.
Melanie Glenn, business manager at the school, told the News: "We would dispute that all the costs mentioned should be attributed to vandalism.
"Many of them are linked to wear and tear of the school and general maintenance issues."
