Printer efficiency to 'help feed school kids'

Businesses and public sector organisations could save more than £1 billion a year by improving their printing efficiency, a leading printer manufacturer has claimed.

OKI, in conjunction with the Centre for Economic and Business Research (CEBR), has carried out research that indicates a large amount of printing is being carried out needlessly.

Around £5.3 billion is spent each year on outsourced printing, with a further £11.4 billion spent on in-house operations, according to OKI.

However, it has said that 20 per cent of this amount is wasted as the documents are never used before being thrown out.

OKI claims that the issue is particularly prevalent in the education sector, where improving printing efficiency and reducing the outlay on office supplies could free up around £115 million every year - enough to pay for 2.2 million primary school meals or help fill the countries current teaching vacancies.

Chris Gill, managing director of OKI, said: "An obvious way for companies to reduce printing costs is to stop all unnecessary outsourced printing - of which over 20 per cent is never even used and then thrown out."

Mr Gill added that firms and organisation need to ensure their printers are optimised to reduce the amount of printer ink they require, that only monochrome printer cartridges are used for printing text documents and that both sides of paper is used in the printing process.
