HP goes green
17/07/2007 16:29
Office supplies provider and computer specialist HP has recycled half a billion kilograms of old office equipment to date, outlining its green credentials.
This total has been achieved over the past three years by recycling items such as HP printer cartridges and office machines and the firm says it has the intention of recycling a further half a billion kilograms by 2010.
It has achieved its target of half a billion tonnes-worth of recycled office equipment six months ahead of schedule and criticised competitor IBM for not following suit and becoming more environmentally-friendly.
Commenting on HP's achievement, chairman and chief executive of the office machine manufacturer Mark Hurd, said: "Environmental responsibility is good business
we've reached the tipping point where the price and performance IT are no longer compromised by being green but are now enhanced by it."
Fortune magazine recognised the green efforts of HP back in April when it named the office supplies provider in its top ten Green Giants list, attributable to its mass recycling of items such as HP printer cartridges.
The magazine said of the office supplies provider that it "will take back any brand of equipment; its own machines are 100 per cent recyclable. It has promised to cut energy consumption by 20 per cent by 2010.
"HP also audits its top suppliers for eco-friendliness and its omnibus Global Citizenship Report sets the standard for detailed environmental accountability."
