Employees 'use printers recklessly'

Office machines UK office workers have not embraced the notion of a paperless office but are instead using printers in a careless manner, according to new research.

The average British worker uses office machines to print 22 pages each working day, a study by Fujitsu Siemens Computers reveals.

It suggests that attitudes towards using printers are fairly relaxed, with 23 per cent of workers saying they do not give careful thought to printing documents.

Additionally, more than half of employees (53 per cent) confess to accidentally printing the same document more than once, while eight per cent regularly print emails they have not yet read.

Paul Parrish, managing director of Fujitsu Siemens Computers IT Product Services, remarked: "Sadly, the paperless office remains a myth for many. Office printing continues to be out of control with very few companies having any transparency on their print costs.

"This is compounded by the fact that there is a general lack of guidelines for employees around printing practices and most people readily admit to not really thinking twice about hitting the print option on an email or document."

The most common reason cited for using office machines to print documents was the need to share information for review.

Fujitsu Siemens manufactures a range of office equipment, including keyboards, computers and wireless devices.
