Changes in the workplace 'improve wellbeing'

Office furniture Making small changes in everything from the position of office furniture to a daily work schedule can help employees become happier and healthier, it has been claimed.

Writing in the Times, Robert Dobson described the various ways that office supplies could be used to improve a worker's wellbeing.

One piece of advice centres on the use of office machines and related peripherals. The article cites research from Norway which states that the correct positioning of a computer screen can reduce neck pain and sick leave.

A properly positioned screen should sit so that the top of the screen is at eye level, it recommends.

Additionally, Mr Dobson suggests that office layout and position of office furniture can make a difference to staff health.

For example, scientists at the Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden found that those who sat at office furniture near windows experienced improved mood.

"Nab a desk next to a window but away from the printer. A study published last month by the Queensland University of Technology found that printers can cause a form of indoor air pollution," the article adds.

Last month, the Bath Chronicle reported on a Stubbs Rich study which found that office furniture and layout had an impact on employee morale.
